Adoption information roadshow to be held in Galashiels

Scottish Borders Council (SBC) is supporting Adoption Week Scotland by hosting an information roadshow on Thursday 23 November from 4-7pm at the Interchange in Galashiels.

Adoption Week takes place this year from 20-25 November with the aim of raising the profile of adoption and highlighting the number of children who continue to need the love, stability and security that an adoptive home can offer.

Supported by the Adoption and Fostering Alliance Scotland, Adoption UK Scotland and the Scottish Government, it is an opportunity for people interested in adopting to find out more and also, for anyone who has gone through the process to share their stories.

The Galashiels event is being held as part of the national campaign and will be of interest to prospective adopters, newly approved adoptive parents and anyone who wishes to find out more about adoption services in the Borders.

As well as being able to speak to officers from SBC’s Family Placement Team and voluntary agencies about local adoption services, they will be able to hear presentations by the Scotland Adoption Register, Adoption and Fostering Alliance Scotland and Adoption UK. Topics will include how to find your birth family, the importance of adoption support and what advice and information is available.

Adoptive parent, Lesley Mason will be sharing her experiences at the event. She said: “There is no doubt that adoption can be a challenging and emotional journey, filled with both stress and joy, but the knowledge that you are creating a forever home for a child that desperately needs one is what keeps you going. You may find yourself doubting your decision countless times – parenting is difficult enough anyway but with adoption you have the additional task of getting to know your child along with all the previous history that he or she brings with them – but eventually you will look back and realise that this has passed and that you have become a family.”

Councillor Tom Weatherston, SBC’s Executive Member for Children and Families Social Work, said:We have many wonderful foster carers here in the Borders without whom we could not provide the care and support needed by those children and young people going through a difficult time with their family relationships. Adoption is taking this to the next level where people are willing to open their hearts and their homes to a child or children on a permanent basis. As Lesley has said, it is not a step to be taken lightly but that does not mean people should not consider it if they have the space in their lives that only a child can fill.

“For anyone who is thinking about adoption, this event is the ideal opportunity to speak to the people who can provide the advice and information they need to help them understand the process and whether they are ready to make the important and life changing step of putting themselves forward for consideration.”

The event is free but places can be booked at:

Information is also available from the Family Placement Team on 01896 662799. For anyone who is unable to attend the event, information about adoption can be found on the Council website at:
